                 " Moose Tours"

Nahmakanta is fantastic moose country ! There is no better area in Maine for seeing moose in their natural surroundings. We have trails and canoes stashed at some of the "moosey-est" spots in the North Woods. As the only year-round residents in the Nahmakanta area, and after 35 years of "thrashing thru the puckerbrush" on foot, on snowshoes, and by canoe, we know the secret moose haunts and backwaters that are largely unknown to the general public. We don't just drive woods roads, where moose usually act unnatural, tame and oblivious to human presence. We guide only small parties (2-4 people) that would prefer to travel into the moose's natural habitat, and observe them feeding and traveling undisturbed. We're also likely to see other wildlife and a variety of birds.

Spring and Summer... Our guests often see big

bulls "in velvet" along waterways in the

                      Nahmakanta area.

Early September ...  We watched this huge

bull moose for several days right near camp.

The pinkish coloration is dried blood....all that

remains after he rubbed and scraped the velvet

off his antlers in preparation for the rutting

                   season later in the month.

RATES: $200 (3-4 hour tour...... early morning or evenings)

" .....encountering moose in the wildest of the deep woods from "Nahmakanta Lake Camps" bought us close to nature and solitude in an unexpected , welcome way.  Don, an experienced woodsman and guide, offered us incredible amounts of information throughout the day, balancing it with periods of silence to allow us to approach moose.  We came amazingly close to the animals in their wetland and forest habitats.  It was a stunning experience we will never forget, entirely different and more satisfying than seeing moose in roadside settings "

Autumn Moose Tour

....for photographers and moose watchers.   We've timed this 3 day guided moose tour to coincide with a very exciting, yearly North Woods phenomena…the period of very high bull moose activity just before the peak of the rutting (breeding) season. During the summer months, large bull moose are secretive loners, mostly nocturnal, and favoring the deepest woods and most inaccessible habitat. But starting in mid Sept, the huge-racked, dominant bulls are ranging far and wide, looking for receptive cows. All summer, we have scouted out the best moose locations in the Nahmakanta wilderness, and in very small groups(2-4) we hike and paddle into these special areas before sunrise and again in late afternoon to observe and photograph moose in their natural surroundings, with near-peak fall foliage and early morning fog as backdrop.

$975/person (package includes 4 nights lodging, all meals, 3 days guiding)
